Flipping For Corrections

I mention before about a quick way to see what proportions are off in a drawing you are working on. Here is a quick example that I learned from a coworker awhile ago.

I first did a few rough drawings in my sketch book to get the poses I wanted, and once I had them set I drew all the characters on 11x17 Blue Line Pro Paper. (1) After, I scanned in the image, the faces of each character started to bother me because of how childish they looked. (2) So I first soloed out each character by duplicating the original layer 5 times and erasing every character but 1 on each layer. Now each character was on their own layer by themselves. Next I brought down the opacity before printing each out again to make some changes.

I drew over the the old sketches, fixing the mistakes along with filling in anything missing. (3) For Falcon, I changed the face a lot, along with adding his left arm and some more detail. (4) It looked like something was off to me so once I scanned him in again, I flipped the image Horizontally in Photoshop by going to
Image > Image Rotation > Flip Canvas Horizontal.

(5) The head and arm felt off to me so I did some quick morphing to the image with the Lasso Tool. (6) Once I had the areas selected I did 1 of 2 things. Repositioned them by moving, scaling, or rotating the area. Or I used Transform > Distort to make it look right.

Once I had that done, (7) I flipped it back over and (8) I lowered the opacity on the layer to started (9) digitally inking. (10) After, I cleaned up the image with the erase tool and added it back to the final composition.

(11) Here is the corrections of Falcon over the original to help show the differences. It wasn't much but just enough to make a difference.

World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 started last week and it has been great so far! I'm a huge soccer fan. Up until last year I was playing on two teams for awhile with friends, it was a lot of fun. I'll have to see about joining a team down here now that I'm all settled in.

Last post I mention a trick to find out how to see what proportions are off in a image your are drawing, next week I'll be making that post. Thanks for stopping by!

Captain America Process

I wanted to do a post on my process for the Captain America drawing I did a few weeks ago. Again, I had a lot of fun working on it. I started off drawing the rough poses for each character in my sketch book. Once I had the poses down, I used reference for each character suit depending on what version I wanted to use. Between the movies and comics universes, I had a lot of options to choose from. Once I had all that figured out, I did a rough sketch on 11x17 Blue Line Pro.  After I scanned it it, I reworked some of the poses. Some digitally, while others I printed out and sketched over.

A neat tricked I picked up from a coworker a few years back really helped me out. If something seems off in your image and your not sure what, flip it! If you flip the canvas (image) Horizontal in Photoshop, or use a light table to see through the paper while its flipped over, you can see what is off in the drawing. This comes in handy in any sort of sketching and even animation. I'll see if I can do a post about this handy trick in the near feature!

Once I had all the sketches looking how I wanted, I brought them back into Photoshop and tighten up the composition. With all that set, I started my digital inking, which I want to get better at and try different styles. Right now, my inking isn't much besides black lines to define the character cloths, muscles, ect. After that, I put a thicker black line around the character.

When I started this drawing, I knew I would have a shield in the foreground blocking the lower halves of the characters. After that I decided to add the America Flags to each side to help contain the composition. Next I started adding color to the image and decided to add a yellow tint to it at the end.

Until next time,

Post MCCC 2014

Wow that was a fun trip! For the last two weeks I have been traveling around visiting family and friends. The trip started with Motor City Comic Con 2014! Once again, it was a great Comic Con! The Alpha Omega team was there promoting The ARMSmaster Project along with some of our other personal work. It was a great weekend of promoting, networking, and catching up with fellow artist!

I got to meet some great talent while I was there. Including Skottie Young! I've been following his career for a long time now so it was awesome to finally meet him. He recently worked on Marvel's OZ comics, and now is working on a series for Rocket Raccoon.

I also got to meet Tyler Shainline and Andy Suriano. Tyler works at Image Comics, and Andy has work on several projects including everyone favorite TV show, Samurai Jack. Together they are working on a new comic called Liberty Justice

I got to see Joe Foo at Motor City again. Always a pleasure to run into this guy. He has his own comic called Desmond's Comic, definitely pick it up!

And of course, the costumes were great as always. Here are a few,

Its always great meeting people at Comic Cons, getting excellent advice and seeing the great fun vibe coming from everyone. One thing i really enjoy are seeing artist getting their personal projects off the ground. I've been to a few Motor City Comic Cons now and you notice a couple of things. The first, people continuing to promote their art, honing their crafts, and constantly growing as an artist. The second is seeing people in front of the table looking at art work, and the next year they are sitting behind the table promoting their own work. Its a beautiful thing.

It was a great time at this years Motor City Comic Con. Cant wait for next time!
