Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the Wrold

Wow this year has gone by quick. It seems like yesterday it was the end of January and I had wrapped up one job and started another one. A company called Speedshape brought me on board to help convert Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World from 2d to 3D Stereoscopic. I was brought on to do some match move animation (Rotomation) work again like I had on Alice In Wonderland but that quickly change after training on The Foundry Nuke. It was a big switch going from Animation to Compositing but it was fun. We converted the whole movie! It was a lot of fun and a great experience. Plus now I know Nuke and have another movie to add to the resume :). Congratulations to the Stereo team at Speedsahpe!

On another note, I am finally animating on a feature film! My career goal! I feel extremely bless at the moment and can't wait for the next challenge.

Floating Board Test

I finally had a chance to finish this test over Christmas break. I started it over a year ago and then stop working on it once it was blocked out. More recently I started back up on the test but decided to start from scratch. I'm pretty happy with the way the test turned out, but I may end up changing the way he falls off the board, I'm not sure if the psychics are correct. Will see what happens.

Fun Faces

Ive been doing allot of work with my Wacom Tablet in Adobe Flash lately. It felt great putting pencil to paper again. I don't think Ill ever prefer digital drawing/painting over the real thing.

On another note, drawing these faces showed me I usually like drawing people looking screen left. Ill work on that in the future ha.

ARMSmaster Bar Enviroment Animated

Here is the Bar scene slightly animated for the ARMSmaster extended trailer. When I designed the image I broke it up into 3 layers to create more depth. I also played around with doing a rack focus in the shot for fun, but the video so small I'm not sure it's noticeable. I really need to sign up for that Vimeo account soon. Now we just need to get some characters in the scenes and it should bring it to life.

I never did a environment and rendered it out like this. I always wanted to but never gotten around to doing it. It was a great experience, and I'm happy with how it turned out. Big shout out to my buddy Jon Bowling for helping me out and showing me how to rendered like this.

This is for a animation project called "The ARMSmater Project." Its for a second extended trailer were working on. At the moment we have a 45 sec Trailer that you can view here. Were in the process of storyboarding, character designs, and basically just brain storming on how to introduce more of this world. At the end it will be a nice little piece with a pitch bible that we can try to sell :)

Fyllo Expressions

I had some free time of late, which has been great to develop these characters more. Also to expand my art portfolio, since I really don't have any "finish" pieces, more just sketches. Allot of times when I'm drawing Fyllo, I draw him with out the flower on his head, then go back over the body with a new sheet of paper on my light table and draw the flower, vines, and leaves afterwards.

Pefko

Pefko (PH-F-KO) is the latest additional to the characters of Fyllo's world. (Still don't have a name for that :/) He's base off a pine tree and a Native American, so I have him able to use his pine needles as weapons and his pine cones as part of his armor.

I'm not sure if this is the final design of the character, but its pretty close. I have a few more characters in mind, I just have to design them.

Yea the kid that just needs a hug. Seems Fyllo still on a angry rampage ha. There is a nice side to this character, I'm sure I'll get around to drawing it at some point along with some facial expressions. I'm trying to figure out a style that I like for the characters and enviroments in this world. I do like how this came out but I dont think this is the style I'm looking for.

Also this picture shows a extra part that I havnt shown in the previous drawings of him, the flower on the back of his big old head. Fyllo has a flower growing out of the back of his head. The main vine leads to his forhead to form the little swirl on it, while it also branches out to his left arm and right leg. It was fun drawing this out, I've been lacking a creative output lately and this just flowed right out :) I have a few other characters I'm going to try to develope soon and post. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Landscape In Motion

This was a little experiment I've been working on when I had some free time. I been wanting to do some environments since I did the realistic photo compilations for the project I was working on with my buddy Carl. Having a landscape broken up into layers really help build depth in a image. In animation it can really help build the illusion of the z space when you pan scenes and have each moving at different speeds. I'm pretty happy with this at the moment. I think the next one I work on will be more realistic rendering, I really want to try to get into more realistic rendering illustrations.

Reed Gunther Motion Comic

This is a motion comic that I got a chance to work on recently. The comic/art work belongs to a friend of mine, Chris Houghton. Through Protonic Reversal, my friend Carl's company that I'm a partner in, we did this motion comic teaser trailer. It was a blast to work on it. The story and characters were fun to work with and translated well into animation. If you get a chance you should check out Chris's comics and other work, along with swinging by the Protonic Reversal website :)

This is the second motion comic job I worked on. The other one I cant show much of the work or talk about what company I did it for. Its fun working on these projects though. Its a mixer of working in Photoshop and then bringing it into After Effects, a program I know all to well. Carl and I split the work down the middle, and then he did the audio for the trailer. You should check out the Protonic Reversal youtube page to see some of the other projects that the company is working on.

Alice Opening Weekend

I just had a chance to see Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland in Imax 3D. I thought it was a good movie. The story flowed well and I really like the characters/acting. What I really enjoyed about it is that they took a lot of lines from the book and scatter them through out the movie, especially "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" I felt it brought a nice touch to the film. They really played on Alice growing and shrinking a lot too, which I really enjoy because so much of the film is CG and there needs to be a reason for it I feel.

It was great finally seeing the shots I work on with all the CG elements and audio tracks :) When I was working on the film, I was working on a lot of green screen shots of the White Queen, Alice, and a few Mad Hatter shots as well. I'm glad to see how the 3D stereoscopic turned out over all as well. I had no clue how this would look on the big screen since it was my first time doing stereoscopic on a job, let alone a feature film. When I was working on it I just kept thinking, "How in the hell is this going to work?" There was so many things we had to do and rules to follow to make sure it was going to look correct, and it did. It funny to see a shot that would take anywhere from 3 days to a full week just fly by in a matter of a second, I gave up trying to show my family the shots I work on about 15 minutes into the film.

Congrats to With A Twist Studios and all the people there that help make Alice 3D stereoscopic!

The Fox, The Weasel, and The TP

1st entry of the year, and I'm giving it to the 11 second club competition. A group of friends and I always say were all going to do the competition for that month, and by the end of it no one found time to haha. Well I'm happy to say this month I pulled it off finally...barely. It was definitely tough finding the time and energy to come home from work just to work on another project. Not to mention I don't have a down shooter to keep testing the work as much as I want.

The test isn't were I want it to be at the moment. I don't mind the weasel animation as much as the Fox's. I did the Fox first and figure out a few things while animating him that made the Weasel easier to animate, especially the face. The main thing that bothers me about the Fox is where he places his left hand on his leg, I want it to be kept there a little longer. I like the funny gag in the story but since its not compete well the video doesn't show it. When the Fox tells the Weasel "So I borrowed it...." he throws a empty toilet paper roll back to the Weasel. I think seeing that and having the outhouse in the background would help sell it really well. Oh well, I'm thinking instead of trying to go back and tweak this test to make it what I want, I may treat it as a "welcome back to hand drawn animation" and move on to the next one.

UPDATE: I got 57th place out of 142th. Not bad, not good, it is what it is :). A lot of people seemed to like it and thought the TP joke was funny. There was one or two comments about acting on the fox which I agree with but I didn't have time to really change any animation after the first pass I did. I think I'm going to compete in the March competition and hopefully by then ill have a downshooter set up so I can test the animation as much as I would like to.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow the years keep flying by quicker and quicker, and this one isn't any different. I've been really busy at work these past few months, that I haven't been able to update this blog at all. I have tons of sketches laying around just waiting to be scanned in or taken to the next level. Hopefully I'll get around to uploading them. I feel very blessed that I've been able to keep landing jobs these past few months after my contract with Kinetic Post ended in July. In August I went to a studio in Detroit called One Of Us Films, and help with a After Effect educational animated film for children. In September I was in Royal Oak working at a studio called Pixo Factor on some motion comic stuff, once again using After Effects. Since the beginning of October I've been working at a studio called With A Twist, their Rochester studio, on Tim Burton's film Alice in Wonderland. Which explains the riddle in the blog title. I find myself for the first time using Maya on a job instead of After Effects or Hand Drawn Traditional haha. Never thought that would happen at this moment in my career. Usually I use Maya for my own personal animation tests and that's it. Alice should take me up to the end of the month, and starting in January I'll be back at Kinetic Post working on the Wonder Pets again. Its crazy that I can say I have worked on a feature film now in my career, hopefully next year and the years to come will be as amazing as this year!

Demo Reel

Here's my latest reel, I'm hoping that ill be able to throw a larger version on my website tomorrow at some point, which brings me to my next topic..... I need to redo my website ha. So it will be Under Construction very soon. I'm still thinking about changing the reel up a bit, mixing up the shots instead of just having them in order, not sure though. Also may take the stop motion completely out. who knows.

iPhone Game

Here's an animation from the iPhone game I was working on. It was the "Special Move" for the character. It's ment to start during the idle and end at the beginging of the idle. Unfortunately the game isn't being made anymore :( But I still got paid :) But the game isn't being made anymore :( and I spent allot of time working on these shots, actually probably more then I should have. I learn allot working on this game, mostly that in gaming animation, you cant do all the easing in and out of the poses you wanted to, because the moves have to be fast pace since its a video game. Think about Punch Out! or any other boxing game. The character throws the punch and brings it right back so the next move can be simulated.

Right now, the stage the animation is at is known as "Tone Matt's" which is why there are all those bubbles around him. I took the clean up animation, frame by frame, and added a line on another additional piece of paper to show were the shadows on the characters will be. I plan on finishing this test completely up and adding it to my reel.

Either way, it was a great experience that taught me allot when it comes to trying to freelance two gigs at once haha. Hopefully Ill be able to work with that group of animators again, and who knows maybe will get the call back to finish up the game!

Alittle Concept Art

As I promised, here is some concept art from one of the pitches were working on at work. I don't want to talk about the story of it at all, but you can get alittle idea of it from the art work. The last few months I've been helping my buddy Carl with the environments for the pitch. It was allot of fun! I forgot how much I like designing environments. It was a real nice change from the character work I do during the day. Hopefully I'll keep running with this and designing some more stuff for some of my own stuff.
Working on this show was a real big change then what I usually work on. Anyone that has seen my work knows I'm more into comedy and family animation, like Pixar, Blue Sky, or some of the stuff Ive been animating on like the Wonder Pets. This is completely different. the show is still funny material, but different audience age range. Haha the first environment I did, I ran it by Carl for the final say and he said "Sweet man, make it more destroyed," it almost brought a tear to my eyehaha. The environments always started off so innocent and by the end there was complete death and destruction. I've posted two versions of the Navy Pier to show what I mean. Either way it was allot of fun to switch up what I'm use to working on and trying something new! The Characters are done and ready to rig. Then the next step is to animate a short to send along with the pitch.

The process on these environments I would do is first thumbnail sketch a few different versions of the environment before I started building it in Photo Shop. After I decided on the composition, I found the resources I needed on the Internet, and some of my own pictures as well. The Photo Shop part of it, actually went by really quick actually, probably since I missed working on environments and it was something different than animation.

Attack of the Grey Monster!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again I haven't been up dating my blog as much as I should, BUT here's an animation for ya to make up for it! :) I started this back in February I believe and then it got put on the back burner for awhile. I guess that's what happens when you have a job, plus trying to do concept art for pitch ideas. Who would of thunk it. I found some time this past week to tweak somethings I wanted on the animation and now its ready to destroy creates, lots and lots of grey creates.

I'm hoping to do a few posting this month of things I've been meaning to post, but haven't had the time to. Thumbnails, concept art, etc. Also now that more of my animation of the Wonder Pets and 3rd & Bird have aired, I can finish cutting that new reel of mine! Plus I figure out the converting of 24 fr to 30 fr or 3:2 pull down as they call it.

A Sort of New Reel

Last month I cut a new Demo Reel up for a few reasons. Ill be cutting a new one again soon enough towards the beginning of next months (hopefully). The 3D animation I start the reel with, I'm still actually working on. I still need to do a little more over lapping with the monster head, show more pushing with the feet, as well as break up the timing of his feet more. Plus I can finally add some of my Wonder Pets work to my reel :)! Which is kind of tricky, since my reel is cut to 24 frames a second and WP is 29.97? maybe 30 frames a second. Got to double check that. So once I wrap up that Monster shot in the beginning of my reel, and find a way to have the WP play back at the correct speed, ill be posting a new reel once again. What's going to work? TEAM WORK!

Some of my animation I worked on for the Wonder Pets finally aired on TV. This might not be my best work on the show, but its the shots I started on and I'm really excited I can finally show some of my work that I have done. Currently were working on Season 3 of the show, but Season 2 is whats being aired on TV right now. For some strange reason Nick Jr. air two of the episodes of Season 3 that I worked on (Save the Raccoon and Save the Lock Ness Monster) a whole season early. Only reason I can come up with is because Save the Raccoon was about recycling, and they aired it on Earth Day :). Either way, it was awesome to see my work on TV. They kept the animation pretty much the same besides the third shot in the quick time. They had Linny cape come over her shoulder instead of staying behind her, and had her push with her arms instead of her shoulders. The way the pipeline works is, we work on a episodes for 2 weeks, then we get 1 week of notes. Once we ship it back to New York, they still do minor tweaks on some shots for another week I believe.

Looking back at this episode is funny. It was my first or second episode with the Kinetic Post and I was so worried about messing up the shots haha. One of the issues I had is they wanted the recycling bin to move while the Wonder Pets were trying to knock it over. When I went to go animate it, all the background elements including the bin were on one layer. We had to get some new elements from Little Airplane (The studio in New York) so I could get the fix done. Now that I look back at this, that must be the smallest thing to worry about. Were constantly getting new elements from LAP or switching out a hat for a shoe.

Over all, the deadlines are tight and at times can be stressful, but working with the team I have, and animating for a living is amazing!

Year Of The OX

Year of the OX! Ive been meaning to do this post for awhile now, just haven't got around to it. This year in the Chinese Astrology is the Ox, my zodiac symbol. Hopefully this means that even bigger opportunities will come along at some point this year :) To go even further, the element for this year is Earth, so I did the colors in Earth tones.

On another note, Ive wrapped up the tone mattes for the apple iPhone game. Now I need to scan all the animation into Photoshop and color it. One thing off my list of do. Now I can focus more on my personal projects, who knows maybe even post more ;)

The Will

Oh man! Is this another post with in a week???? Hopefully I'll be able to keep this pace up. This is one of the side projects I've been working on lately. For those of you that know about the 11 second club will notice the audio is from the December competition, yes I said it, the DECEMBER competition. Have I've been working on this piece since December?? Yes and No, between work and the iPhone game, this piece may have seen 9-12 hrs of work a week. Besides the week I got off of work for Christmas Break, I put some decent hours into the piece then. This was the first time I try to "block" out my animation in 3D, usually I do 'straight ahead" animation in 3d, but if your looking to do this professionally and want to make your director happy, you got to learn how to block out your shots first. It allows to directer to see whats going on in the shot pass the storyboard and lets them make changes on the shot before you wasted weeks on a shot. It was definitely different doing it this way, but I think it worked out better for me in the end. I read about how to block out animation at Keith Lango web site. He breaks it down pretty good, still somethings he mentions that I need to work on, but theres always the next animation test for that. The reason why I called it "The Will" is because the whole concept behind this test is the man is laying on his death bed and it is the girls job to write up his will, but as you see things didn't go to smoothly with that.

11 Second Club is a monthly competition for ANYONE who wants to and can find the time to animate to a 11 second audio clip from a movie that the website choices from. You dl the audio clip from the web site and if you want you can dl free rigs form the site as well. If you win, you get a critique from a industry professional that usually works at some big studio such as Pixar or Dreamworks. Definitely something to do if you have some free time and looking to push your skills even further like I am. Only way to get better is to put the time in.........or pay someone to do it for you, but that doesn't feel as good in the end now does it.

It has been quite awhile since my last post. I've been busy busy busy!!!! Yes I'm using that as an excuse. Besides freelancing at Kinetic Post, one of my friends Jodie Hudson offer me some freelance, work on a iPhone game. Its being done in Traditional Animation (or Classical Animation what ever you wish to call it). After each character is done being animated, were taking every frame into Photoshop to be color and output for the programmers to create the game. I'm not looking forward to scanning in every individual frame one by one, its like you can feel the minutes being taken off your life with every slow scan. After that stage though it should go quickly. Right now I'm working on tone mattes for one of the characters I'm responsible for. On top of the iPhone game I'm also doing some CG animations on (one which I hope to post next week) to build up my reel a little more.

Any who, I saw that I was called out by Jodie in my last post ha ha. So that kick started me to draw a quick picture and post it. So here is Fyllo, everyone one favorite jungle boy again. I thought it would be sweet for Fyllo to slide down and around the jungle on a giant banana leaf when he can. Its been awhile since I spent more than a few mintues on a sketch, so with this drawing it felt great to complete it!

All He Needs Is A Hug

Samurai Jack! Who doesnt love that show! The style of it was great, and it didnt use dialog to get the story, emotion and point across. They used acting to tell the story. Anyone can move something across the screen, its when you actually can put feeling into it that you sell it to the viewer. But anyways, I designed this character, Fyllo, a year or two ago (that sketch is below) and dug him up for the Art Blog Challenge. The Challenge was draw in another style. I though I would give Samurai Jack another try. I did this once in college too, but quickly found out in the critque that there was alot I did wrong haha. So I study it alot more this time, did the drawing in vector using Illustrator, use darker lines to show when things are overlapping, and try to really simplify things from my verison of the drawing. I dont think I nailed the style 100% yet, but alot closer then last time.

Hes pretty simple character, a giant flower on his head with vines growing over his body. His weapon of choice, a sheild and some rocks. I picture him living in a rain forest, a forest protector of sorts. I have Fyllo in some other poses roughed outed as well but just havent had the time to clean up the drawings and render them. In the future I want to make him look more kid like, somewhere in his teens. Also in the poses I drew, he always on the attack, I want to show the fun side of him as well.

Draw With My Left Hand? ARE YOU CRAZY?

The second challenge of the Art Club Challenge was to draw with the opposite hand you usually draw with. What a challenge! Like I mention in my last entry, I was packed at work last week and really didn't have time for anything else but I managed to knock this out in 3 or 5 min. Which is why I didn't really want to post it up on the Art Club Challenge, I didn't have the time that I wanted to put into the drawing. But I ran into Jared and he just said to send it to him as it. Since its going to be posted on the Art Club Challenge Blog, I might as well post it up on mine, along with a right hand version of the drawing of course ha. The Right Hand Verizon is on the top and the Left Hand Verizon is on the bottom, but I'm sure you figure that out on your own. I've been reading I Am Legend a lot which is why I think I ended up drawing a vampire of sorts. Completely different then the kind in that book, but more like Dracula. Over all, I like the challenge as much as I hated it. I felt that I started having a little more control over my left hand the more I was drawing with it. It would of been cool to see what the sketch would of looked like if I had put 30 min or an hour into it. Maybe another day.....

Fast Ball!

Man it been a long week. Ive been packed at worked. I still want to stick with at least one update a week, but will see how that goes for. I started this drawing late last week and would of been done by the end of the weekend but between work and some random computer problems there was no time to clean it up and add color till yesterday. I knock out Colossus real quick, I look up some ref on the Internet and acted out how a baseball pitch is broken down, and after that the pose came pretty easy. Wolverine on the other hand took a few tries before I got it right ( I posted some of the poses i was trying to go with but didn't feel right). I'm still not completely happy with his pose, but for now it will have to due because I don't want to get caught up on this one picture. I drew Wolverine in this suit because its my favorite out of all of his different ones through the years.

So Tim, why is it called Fastball? Well I'll tell ya, its a move that Wolverine and Colossus do sometimes. Colossus picks up Wolverine and throws him at enemies or to get to a target quicker. They showed it in X-Men 3 and recently did it in Uncanny X-Men 500. When I looked up ref for this move all I could find was either Wolverine already thrown or Colossus holding Wolverine with two hands about to start throwing him. I drew it with Colossus throwing Wolverine with one hand instead of two because I thought it was more bad ass! Any who thats what inspired me to do this drawing. I'm not going to make it a habit of drawing already known super heros, just one more for a family member, then who knows when the next one will be. I've got my own characters to design and animate :)

I join this group called Art Club Challenge that my buddy Jared started up. Every week there is a new topic to draw, this week topic: Draw a bulldog in your image. Well I didn't exactly draw a bulldog, I drew a pit bull, whoops! So it looks like I just lost that competition. But anyways, I drew one of my cousins dogs, Max. When I went to California I saw this krazy dog all the time. He was a happy, energetic, friendly, dog. I figure if I was a pit bull, I would be like him. Miss ya buddy, see ya in Cali soon enough.

This is my latest Demo Reel. It's mostly compiled of animations I did over this past year as well as one or two from previous years. It has a mix of traditional hand drawn animation as well as some CG at the end. A huge chunk in the beginning is from my senior project "Firefly" which I hope to have cleaned up and color by the end of this year.
